What is chiropractic?

The central nervous system is your body’s information highway — it controls all function and healing in the body, connecting all of the body’s systems and allowing them to communicate with each other. Understanding and improving your health naturally all starts with chiropractic care. Spinal misalignment or damage interferes with the body’s ability to facilitate healing, which increases the risk of pain, illness, and injury. Chiropractors determine and treat the underlying cause of health challenges to prevent these challenges from occurring in the future

Can I get chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Chiropractic has helped countless women throughout their pregnancies.  Expecting mothers report that their problems with back and leg pain are helped, while others experience an easier birth process with chiropractic. Clinical research has documented chiropractic helping numerous cases of pregnant women whose fetus was in a less than optimal position or breech. After specific forms of chiropractic care, many pregnant women achieved improvement of the fetal position resulting in an easier birth.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes!!  Chiropractors use scientific research, clinical experience, and patient preferences to provide the best care possible. Ninety-five percent of past-year chiropractic users say it’s effective, and 89 percent recommend chiropractic to their family and friends.

Chiropractic is safe, effective, affordable care.

Can I learn to adjust myself?

NO!  People ask me if I adjust myself all the time and I say I went to school for 9 years in total for this, and I can’t adjust myself, so how could you.  I also see a chiropractor for my weekly adjustments to keep me functioning my best.

Will I be required to remove my clothing at my appointment?

No you will not.

What should I expect on my first visit?

If you’ve never been treated by a chiropractor, you might be wondering what the experience will be like. It’s normal to feel a little anxious about trying something new, so our goal is to put you at ease right away.

Visiting a chiropractor is similar to visiting other healthcare providers, but we do things a little differently. For starters, you’ll be greeted warmly by our Front Desk team member — and not from behind a glass wall like in most doctor’s offices. We want you to feel like family! We’ll ask you to complete a health questionnaire for Dr. Erickson to review to give you the best care possible.

After Dr. Erickson reviews your intake forms, the two of you will discuss the health concerns that brought you here. And to help us determine what your body has been trying to tell you, your doctor will start with a set of physical assessments.  He may perform motion tests, palpation, reflex testing, muscle strength comparisons, and x-rays (if needed). These assessments will give Dr. Erickson a baseline of your current health and help him determine if he can help you along with a treatment plan to get you feeling better.

The best chiropractic care comes from building a strong relationship and being transparent about where it hurts and what we can do to help. We want to hear your questions, and we’ll take all the time necessary to make sure you feel confident about your treatment plan. We’re here to be your partner on the journey to a healthier, happier you.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for newborns and children?

Regardless of age, a properly functioning nervous system, free from interference from subluxation, is essential for development and growth. Chiropractic has not only been shown to help children with a variety of health challenges, but chiropractic helps children achieve a higher level of performance and function.

It has been well documented that the birth process can be traumatic on a young newborn’s spine. Nerve system interference, known as subluxation, created during the birth process can have a serious impact on a baby’s health and development. Many clinical studies have documented a variety of health issues in infants being resolved under chiropractic care.

Adjustments given to newborns, infants or babies are very different from those given to adults. Specific adjusting techniques are used to gently correct spinal issues safely, with no discomfort. Studies have proven the effectiveness and safety of chiropractic care on the youngest of the population.

As toddlers begin to walk, a whole new dynamic of spinal function comes into play. Not only is gravity being applied to the spine differently than when the baby was crawling, but toddlers often fall when learning to walk. This is a critical time to make sure that the spine and nervous system is free from interference due to subluxation. A large volume of documented cases have shown that children with a variety of health issues lead normal and healthy lives with chiropractic. Many common childhood issues would be less common if more children had their spines checked for subluxation.

Adjustments given to toddlers and children are specifically designed for their young spines. Chiropractic has been shown to be both safe and effective for this age group.

Children in school are subject to a variety of spinal stresses that can create issues in their young spines and nervous systems. Not only are they sitting at a school desk for extended periods of time, but in many cases, they are carrying heavy backpacks on their developing spines. Additionally, many children are either starting sports and increasing their activity, or spending more time in front of electronic media, and the possibility of subluxation creation becomes obvious.

Attention to a child’s spine and nervous system is the best way to ensure that your child grows and develops properly. Chiropractic is the one health profession that deals with the detection and correction of subluxations, thus allowing children to express better health.

What type of education and training do chiropractors have?

Chiropractors are licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. A rigorous course of study is necessary to receive the Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree.  According to the American Chiropractic Association, there are over 40,000 doctors of chiropractic practicing in the United States.  Most state licensing boards require at least four years of undergraduate education (a few states require a bachelor's degree), and completion of a four-year chiropractic college course load.  To maintain a license, almost all states require completion of a specified number of hours of continuing education each year.

What is a Naperville chiropractic adjustment?

Adjustments:  Chiropractors believe that interference with the body's muscular, nervous and skeletal systems (especially the spine or vertebrae) impairs many important body functions and lowers resistance to disease. A great emphasis is placed on keeping the spine functioning properly to relieve pressure on connected muscles, joints and nerves.  Such therapy not only helps problems in the back, but also aids in improving the feet, hands, and internal organs.  This is done by the physical manipulation of bone and soft tissue.

In fact, spinal adjustments may relieve a spectrum of ailments such as tension headache, certain types of migraine, menstrual cramps, allergies, asthma, stomach disorders, spastic colon, and arm, hand, and leg pain that's due to dysfunction of the neck or lower back. Some patients with asthma and emphysema even turn to chiropractic care to release tension in the chest.  A study presently underway will help determine if manipulation of the neck helps the ears drain properly, thus alleviating otitis media ~ the ear infection that plagues children

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND RISKS OF NAPERVILLE CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

One of the main appeals of chiropractic care is that it has the potential to bring numerous benefits at very little risk. First of all, chiropractic treatments are generally non- or minimally-invasive, so the risk of complications is very low from the start. Furthermore, chiropractic care is an excellent alternative to more invasive treatments or even medication use, which may mask symptoms but fail to treat the true cause. Chiropractic care uses natural methods and techniques to help not only relieve symptoms, but address their root cause as well.

WHAT IS PEDIATRIC CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

Pediatric chiropractic care is focused on providing non-invasive and drug-free treatment to children suffering from spine-related health conditions. For instance, pediatric chiropractic care can be used to treat conditions common in children such as scoliosis and back pain caused by poor posture and carrying heavy back packs at school. Chiropractic treatments, such as regular spinal adjustments, have also been found to be effective in preventing some medical problems in children as they age and develop, such as osteoporosis and arthritis.

WHAT IS PRENATAL CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

Prenatal chiropractic care is offered specifically to pregnant women. Specifically, prenatal care can help to make women more comfortable throughout pregnancy in addition to making labor easier. Chiropractic techniques such as therapeutic massage and regular spinal adjustments can help to relax muscles, relieve back and neck pain associated with pregnancy, and improve alignment of the spine for a smoother birth.
